A background in fine art and over 25 years in commercial and editorial photography have resulted in an extensive client and publication list. After years of large-format camera and darkroom work I have found the transition to digital cameras and printing invigorating and exciting. My partner, the artist and teacher Nancy Purington (www.nancylpurington.com) and I have inhabited a rambling, 150 year-old farm house surrounded by gardens, meadows and woods on the outskirts of Iowa City for over 35 years. Trips to canoe country on the border of Minnesota and Ontario provide a busman’s holiday each year.

Archival inkjet (giclee) prints are available of many of the images on this website. Contact me for sizes and prices.

Spring 2015 Boundary Waters Journal

Joe Richard is a a Florida writer, photographer and fishing guide. His account of his first trip to the Quetico Provincial Park with us last spring is the lead article in the Spring 2015 edition of The Boundary Waters Journal along with two of his photographs and three of mine. The cover shot is of Gary Fiedler on his 220-day solo canoe trip (either a “selfie” by Gary or by Dawn LaPointe of Radiant Spirit Gallery in Duluth ). We crossed paths our first day out and Gary found the new fishing shirt I left behind on a portage on a hot day and he wore it for the rest of the trip, then sent me a couple beautiful prints in exchange. The paddle shot was taken in 2011 on Kahshahpiwi Lake.BigAgonyBWJB
